My name is Steve Cisco, DPT. I am a physical therapist and owner of Pediatric Return 2 Sports Therapy. I grew up in Chicago and am sports enthusiast both as an athlete and fan. I have a bachelors degree in Biology from the University of Miami and a MBA from Florida Atlantic University. My career prior to physical therapy is rooted in professional and collegiate sports; Miami Marlins, Miami Heat, University of Miami and Florida International University. While I loved supporting these team, a flag football injury that resulted in a broken leg lead me through extensive physical therapy and to my true passion. I went back to school and earned my doctorate degree from the University of Washington. I spent nearly a decade working at Seattle Children’s Hospital in their Sports Therapy Department where I developed return to sports protocols that are now used in hospitals and clinics across the country. I have published a unique return to throwing program that is based on data and designed for kids of all ages, not professional athletes.
Today I live in Allendale with my wife and 3 active kids who participate in baseball, soccer, hockey, dance, softball and basketball for now. For fun I enjoy being involved in my kid’s activities and exploring new places either on a trail or around the city. Our family recently moved to the area from Seattle, Washington so please share your recommendations! I personally live an active lifestyle. I enjoy working out daily, practicing yoga and have run 10 marathons.
It’s simple, treat each kid as if they were my own. I ask patients to try their best and have fun every session. While we cannot control results, we can control effort and effort is always easier when something is fun! When a patient puts in effort both at the session and at home, results typically follow. I believe in providing one on one care that is specialized to each patient which helps them return to their sport or activity as quickly and safely as possible. Patients returning to sports are stronger and oftentimes more confident than before the injury due to learning proper mechanics and having gained strength. I believe in objective measures. This means I will take objective data measurements throughout our sessions by establishing a baseline, validating progress and having the patient exit therapy upon passing return to sports test. I have written return to sports tests for knees, ankles, and shoulders that are used in hospitals and clinics across the country today. The treatment techniques I use are based on nearly a decade of experience working exclusively with kids, as well as research, the best of both worlds!
Pediatric physical therapy and physical therapy is a similar relationship to a pediatrician versus a primary care doctor. Children are different than adults. They deserve a sports physical therapist who understands pediatric injuries and addresses their emotional and psychological needs in a comfortable, nurturing and safe environment. Education for both the patient and their family is a key component to the treatment plan. Many youth injuries are caused from overuse or faulty movement patterns. Upon learning proper mechanics and potential warning signs, repeat injuries can be prevented.
